Children do all the time, and I'm pretty sure children have a rudimentary understanding of hands.

But they lack the abstraction necessary to call them self-aware (by the current definition). That’s actually a test to check the development of a child. A child is not very intelligent yet. But it is able to become it on its own just by observing. ChatGPT isn’t.

ChatGPT gained all of its abilities through observation, i.e. training. Changing the discussion from "understanding" to "self awareness" is really moving the goal posts.
