It doesn't except for a 10-second window today. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34460417

I swear I saw a heart emoji a few months ago in a comment at the bottom of a long thread. Not sure if it was a bug, an easter egg, or maybe a figment of my imagination.

Also I wonder if you have a secret dashboard full of buttons to control this website, and now there's a "Enable emojis for 10 seconds" button, next to "Subtract 1 karma to anyone with a custom topcolor" and "Promote a random Lisp post to the front page"

It might have been a rendering of U+2661 ♡ or U+2665 ♥ or U+2764 (this last one does get stripped by HN) which are not emoji but may be rendered as such by the browser.

This is dangerous information to spread. Censor yourself, or it will be abused and we will lose this easter egg forevermore.

Let's keep it a secret between you, I and dang's emoji stripping code.

🆔 this type of thing works too

Ah ffs, this is why we can't have nice things on the Internet.

There's a fairly new CSS selector to configure emoji rendering, choosing between a text-like rendering and the coloured emoji rendering.

So far, there's very little browser support.

I really love the text-like style. I didn't know Unicode added as composing character to ask for that style!

That's awesome. Those are so easy to read and I love how they play nice with users' font coloring choices.

That does keep things interesting (as long as it's not super common) though i do wonder how it looked previously (did it just strip the emoji or is there like a ":pwease:" dropped in?

it just stripped the emoji
