It feels to me like (mandarin) chinese is like acoustic assembly 'scrolling by' my ears very fast, while the english higher level subtitles have not much time to stay, in comparison.
Besides that, excellent production values, but not that overwhelming. Which isn't a surprise for me, because I thought of the book as mediocre, or not my thing. At least it was interesting enough to read it/them to the end. Thought of it as bad translation, at the time, maybe it's more of a cultural thing, or upbringing. Don't know. Will watch it to the end anyways, because curious!
It took a few to get into it but by around episode 7 it made enough momentum to want the next episode.
The cultural revolution scenes/episodes are excellent.
I was not a big fan of the book 3 /5 but I’d give the Chinese TV adaptation 4 /5 and will watch it all.
How will the Netflix English language adaptation compare?
