Very short summary: IBM closed the main US R&D centre for AIX, the last proprietary UNIX in commercial development.
Linux has passed Open Group compatibility testing: it is a UNIX™®.
And it's now the last one in active development, aside from Apple macOS.
And they went through a lot of pain around 4.2Lite to eliminate any remaining AT&T code.
So, strictly, not by the original definition _or_ by the post-1993 one.
But in real life? Yes, definitely.
