My solution to this problem was to print the todo file whenever a terminal is opened using .bashrc. It works much better as I see the terminal more often than the desktop.

I've found that a yellow post-it on top of screen is an effective reminder for important stuff.

I turn off the computer at night, so I see it at least twice a day.

Post-its work if you work in the same location all the time and don't have a huge amount of to-dos.
