Ask HN: Do any major E-commerce Companies have Modals in their Checkout Process?

Are the examples of major e-commerce companies using a Modal in their checkout process?

Thinking companies like: Amazon AliExpress, eBay, etsy, Flipkart, Groupon, Rakuten, TaoBao, Walmart, Wayfair, etc.

Trying to understand if Modals are considered "Good UX" by collecting data on what the biggest e-commerce companies - who have the most to lose in terms of conversion - do when it comes to UX in practice.

Not looking for a theoretical answer/discussion, but rather to understand if anyone has seen a Modal in practice on a major e-commerce site during checkout.

By "in their checkout process" do you mean only the checkout screen itself, i.e. the screen where you press a button and your card gets charged as a result? Plenty of sites use upsell modals during checkout: Amazon has that stupid "hey, d'ya want to pay for a warranty?" screen, Doordash tries to get you to add groceries on to your order, Weee! tells you you can save more money by spending more money, etc.

Good call. Indeed Amazon does have the super annoying upsell after adding an item to the shopping cart. It must convert well for them it to still be enabled ... But for the actual checkout - once you have finished adding all items to shopping cart, I haven't seen a Modal on Amazon.

With all respect to people who use/love https://www.sayweee.com ... I don't consider them to be a major player in e-commerce. More of a niche/specialty seller. There are plenty of examples of niche/tiny e-commerce sites using Modals to frustrate their users. Want to focus on bigger players with the resources to be more data-driven in their design/UX decisions.

I guess it's after you've actually placed the order, though they want you to know that it (for a limited time) anything you add during that flow will be included in your original delivery, at no extra charge. They show a map of the business and your house, and have what I would call a takeover modal on top of it. It's a modal in the sense that you can't practically do anything else before you address it, because it takes up most of the screen. It's got a countdown timer, and a list of places where you can add items to your order.

Yeah, if it's after checkout, then it's a smart use of an interrupt; i.e. they are hijacking the person's attention to increase cart size [profits]. Still don't think they need to use a Modal though ... people will still add items they "forgot" they needed without a Modal.
