Leaving aside the hypocrisy angle of mastodon et Al. This is opinion dressed in the language of facts. Loads of places have contracts like "if you leave early you have to pay us back". Running your society like that is a political choice. The Chinese government would probably say the society that poaches doctors from poor communities is the bad one.

You don't see a lot of people trying to get into Cuba, North Korea, China, the former USSR, etc.

I think you missed the context that Twitter is now reportedly banning links to Mastodon.

This is an apparent attempt to slow down or prevent people leaving Twitter.

“I want to start a new life in the USSR” was actually a popular thing between 1918-33 roughly. Many Western communists did emigrate to build the workers’ paradise.

As foreigners they were of course particularly suspicious in Stalin’s paranoid purges, and most ended up dead or in Siberia.

After WWII everyone in the West pretty much understood the Stalinist reality and not even the staunchest Soviet apologists would actually want to move there.
