I think 50 years from now this moment will be studied as how a country self sabotaged themselves out of potential world dominance.
You're a country with cheap manufacturing. Become the world's manufacturing hub for the higher tech design firms. Then as your economy ramps up, your education goes up, you start becoming more and more like those design firm based countries. At some point you switch over and find yourself a new country to base cheap manufacturing in. Say.. Africa?
So now, does the US and Apple, have a cheap manufacturing alternative? Does China?
These investments will likely be used to compete directly against Apple.
Tim Cook likely recognizes that China will shake down Apple for as long as Apple relies on Chinese labor.
