Relatively speaking, sure, but in absolute terms isn't almost everyone kinda shit at programming? Ars longa and so forth.

I've been programming for creeping up on 30 years, since I was 7, and built a conga line of impressive software, but my designs are often some awkward thing I fumbled my way into discovering, my code isn't half as structured as it could be and my variable names are weird and inconsistent.

This demonstrates that a) in general, you love programming: when someone is seven years old and spends their time learning how to program, it's rarely because of an oppressive parent figure breathing down their neck; b) you don't enjoy and therefore skimp on some rigorous/esoteric aspects of programming (which is normal, considering the subject is in totality such a vast intellectual field that you can easily have aspects you are super enthusiastic about, and others that bore you to tears), with the concrete result being as you said.
