Not all buddhists are good (so don't be confused by that golden statue or the buddhists outfit of the politicians). There is a sect of buddhists known as "red caps" or "sorcerers". Unlike traditional buddhists, that sect worships desire, nihilism and practices certain rituals that have nothing to do with buddhism. This sect congregates in Bhutan, Sikkim. They would certainly support this cult of materialistic desire.

I'm on spotty wi-fi and the article maybe missed a bit, are you referring to the LGBT umbrella as a "cult of materialistic desire" or was there something more reasonable that I missed?

They did. Thinly veiled homophobia is unfortunately not that uncommon on HN.

Materialistic? I fail to see how LGBTQ folks are more or less beholden to desire than straight folks... or that some Buddhists are 'bad' for not practicing in a certain way.

By materialistic cult I meant a cult that puts on pedestal your body and desires, especially the sexual desire. Above these two is a slightly finer cult of knowledge and mind. And buddhism concerns only what's above mind - buddhi, or wisdom. Edit: the "bad rituals" of those pseudo-buddhists includes orgies and animal/human sacrifies; they are not a bunch of philosophers who debate about terminology in ancient texts.

LGBT people are just people who like different things to the mainstream, they don't put body or desires on a pedestal in the same way that straight cisgender people don't do this.

Please don't make sweeping negative generalisations about groups of people in the way you've done in this thread, such an ugly way to treat other human beings.

Where did I mention lgbtq? I'm talking about a link between materialistic cults and a sect in Bhutan. Deciding who fits the description of a materialistic cult is up to the reader.
