That definitely has shifted in meaning over the years then. I remember when the selling point of these DBs was the exclusion of SQL.

It's a really overloaded term these days. In some cases it's also used as a synonym for document DB's or K/V stores.

Best way to read it nowadays is probably "not like the popular DB's of the 90's".
