It's already behind a login wall, which without an adblocker is not far off.

Even without logging in, posts of Twitter remain readable to the outside world if you have a direct URL to the Twitter post.
A paywall would mean that you can't access the content without logging in.
Very few parts... simply scrolling on a Twitter post will prevent you from reading the rest of the thread or comments.
I wonder how many of the average users would stay if it wasn't free... Or even if just posting would cost money...

There’s a real possibility that pretty soon, most things on the internet are gonna be behind a paywall, anything that’s not will be riddled with ads and bots. I hope I’m wrong though.
Good riddance. Back to the smaller communities of the early 2000s.
I would think putting up a paywall would make a wonderful echo chamber. Can't see how random people would pay for social media after being trained and trained it's free.
