US senator seeks antitrust review of apartment price-setting software

Having worked for a short time in the back office of a large apartment complex, all I can say is, "good."

You wouldn't believe the ways that rent rates is manipulated by these companies and their computers. I've always wanted to write about it, but I think I would get sued into oblivion.

This is so unpleasant, but I still wonder whether this isn't focusing efforts on the wrong thing, when removing regulations that prevent new housing being built would not only reduce the leverage that landlords have, but also reduce the number of people paying rent to live in a place long term. We need to bring housing prices down so that people aren't handing over a lifetime of surplus wealth to people who are already richer than they are.

I'm happy to see action here, but I feel like in the modern world there's so much space to hide "cheating" in "AI decision making". This is just one volley and I just don't think that in the long term, the war is going to be won the side of (any kind of) free & fair markets.
