Ultimately, unless a platform is open source like Usenet, they have no reason to enable API access long-term. It can be a useful tool to get buy in from highly engaged users but ultimately is a liability because it limits your ability to serve ads (see Reddit). Even if that means you alienate your core users and send your platform into a death spiral, quarter driven middle managers don't care.
So don't get your hopes too high, or at least, have a backup social media site when this cycle starts back up in 5 years.
