I think a lot of people forget the dark days where they'd tell you if you want to learn to program, first you need to learn Q-BASIC, then you need to learn enough C to be a malware writer, then you need to learn everything in the ESR "How to be a hacker" essay... and then you might be told one summer maybe you should try Python if the ambiguity in Perl's syntax is frustrating you -- not only is the language making strikes, but I love how often the barrier is my attention span, not the documentation.
(The problem used to be the reverse when I first got interested in general purpose computing... little to no guides and a lot of very rude people posting during work hours.)
