Right now, GNOME is probably the last example you should cite as "getting it right" if you're trying to convince open source developers of something. GNOME's UI decisions of late are not particularly popular with the crowd you need to convince.
I'm saying, citing the project they think is an example of bad design isn't going to help, your opinion will carry less weight.
