What about https://acoustid.org/? You can get a free API key and search for a chromaprint generated with e.g. ffmpeg...

You would want to compute the chromaprints from the mod archive yourself, but acoustic would work quite well. Its fingerprints only consume about 15 bytes per second.

Matching songs merely requires finding bit patterns with minimal hamming distance. Alignment requires a couple tricks, but nothing onerous.

If you're interested in commercial applications of this tech, Mediaguide placed radio receivers in major markets, sampled audio there, and fingerprint matched it, selling reports of what they found. Two buyers of such data would be music content holders as well as advertisers, both of which want to make sure every airplay was paid for or whatever.

It's not really DIY Shazaam. It's Shazaam for mods.

It's how much music was made in the 90s for games, in the demo-scene and for general music production.

Yep basically the tradable music format before MP3s took over.

MIDI was designed is to interface between hardware synths and is a serial communication format. Modules are a digital song format intended to be played by a MOD player.
