Yup. Seems like they consistently invent their own thing that's different than what RH/Suse/etc... come up with, then give up and just use that thing (Upstart vs. Systemd, Mir vs. Wayland, Unity vs. Gnome Shell and now Snap will probably lose to Flatpak...).
I think the Linux community's reflexive hatred of anything Canonical does is a major turn off. Unity wasn't bad, and judging by how much Wayland has struggled I am curious what would have happened if Mir was still around.
Wayland's fine if you don't use Nvidia (which seems to be true of many things that Nvidia breaks).
That being said, I didn't mind Unity or Mir.
They're trying to answer or get ahead of Red Hat but failing every time. Systemd beat Upstart, RH-captured Gnome beat Unity (and helped ensure Systemd was the easiest way to go for a general-purpose desktop distro, in the process), Wayland beat Mir, and Flatpack may not win but Snap sure as hell isn't gonna.
