Yes the characters look weird without legs, but they didn't need to be real legs that can dance around and kick. Who cares about legs. Who cares about walking when you can point where you want to go and teleport there with a click of a button.
The avatars don't need to look like real people, they don't need to walk around boring office spaces and do things we do in the real world. They could be so much more.
