Secondly, and more importantly, you bring up an interesting point about spelling. Is spelling directly related to expertise or understanding of a topic. In my case probably not, I’m Dyslexic, spelling has been something that I have to actively work on every day. When I’m writing comments, email, documents or code, I’m constantly having to check myself.
Usually when I post to HN I end up editing the post a couple of time, after posting. I usually go back 5 minute later and reread the post, fresh eyes help to spot mistakes.
In this case it was 11.45 and I went to bed, my mistake. Should have reread the post, but there you go. I was careful to go and check how to spell “Cremant De Bordeaux” though, went to Google to check that one.
When I was younger, and other Dyslexic people I know, my lack of confidence in spelling effected my confidence in contributing to something. So my ask to people on the internet, when you call out a spelling mistake, don’t use it as an opportunity to gate keep or assert superiority over someone. I’ve come to terms with it, but it’s the type of comment that pushes people out of a community.
In general HN commenters are brilliant about these mistakes, a short comment pointing it out is all that’s required. Not judgment.
