The core of Facebook is the idea of reinventing Myspace as a business app with a formal design. From that point of view, it makes sense to let Microsoft reinvent the 3d user experience.
I doubt that it will create the package that will establish 3d headsets. For a workplace, it's a feature that the colleagues in a meeting are at a distance. On the other hand, we would already know if a virtual desktop with a huge spreadsheet would be more efficient than a monitor.
Without a Steve Jobs, users have to figure out the purpose of 3d headsets by themselves. Meta should follow the model of the PC and let every producer of electronics build a compatible product. Let everybody use the patents as long as they build a headset that fulfills the spec.
They should also avoid any lock-in and choose a free operating system. Only then can it be used by enthusiasts to experiment until the purpose of 3d headsets is found.
This can still be beneficial for Meta because they can establish themselves as the leading market place for 3d apps. Furthermore, like ads on the web, there is a need for an ad network because all the free apps need to be financed. Meta can ride the network effect of being the first mover.
Meta has the chance to create the next platform. I doubt that they will take the risk. By locking it down, they can be sure that they will never lose whatever they create. Unfortunately, they are only on a way to create the precursor to the 3d ipad.
