Ask HN: Am I spoiled by SQLAlchemy and Alembic?
Looking at creating a new application that will need a local SQLite database. With my background with Flask/SQLAlchemy/Alembic, although not able to use that tech stack here, I thought I'd find a plethora of ORMs (I did) and code-native database migration tools (I did not).
I did find some migration tech (good to see Redgate is still going) but the nice thing about Alembic is you can change your SQLAlchemy schema objects, run a command and it generates you up and down migration code for them, which you can then review/tweak as needed. This in my experience is pretty bulletproof. Most tools seem to require you to write SQL in the migration blocks, which to me introduces a source of error that would require much more testing.
Am I spoiled? Or is there a host of tools out there that do this? I've seen GORM has a migration tool, but what about Java's Hibernate, or any ORM for Swift/Kotlin?
