Laravel for backend is pretty nice, look into its middleware and resource/collection wrapping. Its ecosystem has some good solutions to common things as well, like auth and roles, and Nova is nice to get an easy view into things while developing without having to write a dashboard.
I'm using it with React, but any frontend framework would work with it. It grew up along with Rails so there's some similar thinking, and you can choose which level of bare metal or magic that you want depending on what you're doing.
