Vienna Teng – The Hymn of Acxiom

My submission here is just is a song by Vienna Teng from her 2013 album 'Aims', but I think it has more relevance to Hacker News than may be initially apparent. And I think it's a really brilliant piece of art.

You have the start that reads and sounds like a Christian hymn, but a wrongness creeps in. Eventually you realise Acxiom is a data collection and marketing company, and the machine-like sound of the singing isn't just a vocal effect but the machine itself speaking.

The algorithm gathers everything about you and feeds your desires back until finally, ultimately, it possesses you. There's the double meaning in "embrace you for all you’re worth." And then finally, sensing your discomfort, confusion. Isn’t this what you want?
