I have read, for example in the article on Italy in Drout's J.R.R. Tolkien Encyclopedia (2006), that Tolkien's fiction has traditionally been associated with right-wing politics in Italy. I couldn't understand that at all, and while this article gives some background, it still sounds too surreal for a real explanation. Maybe I just don't appreciate Italian political culture.
