Ask HN: Do you always check the same job boards?

I wonder, if you need to search for a job in the tech space do you always go to the same job board, the most common ones?

Do you prefer a job board like Dice, Indee, etc, or sites like LinkedIn or Hacker News Jobs?

Right now is trending RemoteOK due to the all remote work hype, also WeWorkRemotely.

There are also a lot of niche job boards like, in Web3 or Crypto, for ReactJS devs, design jobs, etc. Do you like niche ones?

There are so many that you don't know where to look at!

I am asking because I am building https://jobboardsearch.com which is a board of job boards (so far I've inlcuded 326 job boards and growing), it has boards feature tags to filter them, recentrly added a feature to fetch jobs (ATM only 16 job board has this feature), you can see only job boards with a job list at https://jobboardsearch.com/with-jobs-listing

Do you think is handy to have a curated list of job boards in the same pleace?

I think it's a pretty solid list. At first glance, kinda similar UI to https://ai-jobs.net/ where I usually look for AI-related jobs. The wall of love is a nice touch too!

Thanks a lot for the feedback, honestly appreciate.

During the weekend added ai-jobs bot to fetch jobs from their feed, so also listing their jobs :)

If you know any cool job boards that you know and is missing please let me know, I'd to include it.

It's the 1st time anyone mention the Wall of Love :D

Thanks again!!!

I avoid the job boards entirely, because their signal-to-noise ration tends to be rather poor. I work with a trusted recruiter, supplemented by going direct to specific companies that interest me or are doing things that interest me.

Interesting, probably a better approach if you are not a fresher and already have your network, know trusted recruiters.

But not even to learn which are the companies hiring?

When you said "supplemented by going direct to specific companies", how do you find out the ones hiring?

Thanks for your reply :)

> a better approach if you are not a fresher and already have your network

Well, it's true that I've been doing this for a very long time and have a good reputation in the industry. That's a tremendous advantage. But my approach now is no different than it was when I was still wet behind the ears.

> When you said "supplemented by going direct to specific companies", how do you find out the ones hiring?

I look for businesses that are doing something that is interesting to me. I'll check out the "available jobs" section of their website, if they have one. But if they don't, I'll submit my resume to them anyway.

I don't worry very much if a company claims to be actively hiring or not. Companies are often hiring before they post any job listings at all, and many companies are always willing to hire someone who is a great fit for them even if they aren't actively looking for people. It's always worth a shot.

If I am very interested in the company, I'll try to find someone who already works there to act as my advocate, give my insight as to who I should talk to, etc.

Thanks John, I think is super valuable what you are sharing here.

Yeah, agreed that is a tremendous adventage, but good on you!

> I look for businesses that are doing something that is interesting to me

How / where? What is exactly "interesting" to you? Do you mean from a tech point of view or business model?

Both, but mostly from a tech point of view.

A company can absolutely have a business model or behavior that I dislike. I avoid those.

But what I typically want from a position is the opportunity to learn something new that I find interesting. What I find "interesting" depends a lot on where I'm at at that point in my life. If I'm working in a job where I'm just doing the same old stuff, my skillset is dying and I consider that to be a professional risk.

That aspect of a job is the most important thing to me. It's more important than compensation or benefits. I'll take a lower-paying job that excites me over a high-paying job that bores me every time.

Nice!!! Thannks a lot man :)
