Verge Redesign
theverge.com
theverge.com
Clearly it's intended to optimize mobile browsing experience since it's very vertically stacked - but at the cost of alienating non-mobile readers since now one is forced to scroll downward for new content. Also the color scheme makes it hard to differentiate the types of content/posts.
Seems assine to not give readers an option to use the old layout for an interim period, similar to how Reddit did their transition.
It looks like two designers got into a fight over how the new website should look and the decision maker in charge let each one take over certain parts of the design. It feels jagged and lacking integration.
The landing page feels sloppy and makes it harder to see all the recent stories. Why do I need to scroll so much to see the recent stories? Before they were all on the page with nice boxes for each story. It was pleasant and easy to find what I wanted to read. This "storystream" makes me want to go to some other website.
The new logo feels "hostile". Just write the name in a font that can be easily read.
It’s a major shift for sure, will be interested to see how my time with the site adapts.
Why do these companies feel like they want to be tech companies. The Verge have always been trying to act like they're innovating their tech stack. They're not a tech company. They need to just customize a wordpress theme (or equivalent), and worry about content.
In the case of The Verge, I feel like they've been talking about themselves this way since they launched. It's definitely a part of their DNA.
was busy before, but manageable, this is taking it to next level, removed all the extra space : )
Some elements are growing on me, but still...
Much easier to scan and read.
