A third of the country is willing to forego democracy in favor of a strong leader. They're willing to have politicians remove judges they don't agree with. They're willing to let politicians silence the press. A third of the country. Not just Republicans.
I don't have concrete data, but my impression is that the numbers were a lot lower in the past. And therefore I suspect that as a society, we are failing at transmitting our values to the next generation. And, I think, it's going to continue, because I don't see any groundswell of will to do so developing. So, hold on tight, the future's going to be quite a ride...
"Would you rather have a weak elected leader or a strong unelected leader?"
I suspect "Would you be in favor of permanently getting rid of democratically elected leaders in exchange for a strong leader right now?", you would not get the same response.
It's not clear to me that respondents were thinking through the implications of the question. Of course, it is clear to me that many people rarely think through the implications of political problems and decisions, so maybe it wouldn't matter either way.
Presidents should be able to remove judges whose decisions go against the national interest polls 42% democrat and 29% republican. Does this reflect the current status quo and how much would it change if it was a democrat majority supreme court?
Likewise 42% of republicans vs 31% favoured strong unelected leaders, but how would this change if the republicans were in power?
