All destined to be sitting on a scalper's shelf where they'll be consuming zero power. I hate this console generation.

That's not how scalpers operate. They're interested in getting the product off their hands as fast as possible. Given that PS5s are produced in mass quantities, and that supply disruptions are easing, buying and holding PS5s is almost certainly a money losing proposition.

The Retail -> Scalper -> Buyer flow this console generation is frankly ridiculous. In an informal friend survey, more friends bought PS5s through a non-retail market (eBay, scalper, w/ mild inflated prices) then retail direct.

TBH, MS and Sony should just have a direct sell console waitlist (if they don't?). Steam Deck distribution was slow during the initial ramp, but data currently seems to show that they'll bust through their backlog for holiday demand. Valve did it well.

Sony has a direct sell waitlist for the PS5 on the Playstation website. I signed up for it back in June. I received an email in August saying I had a 5 hour window to purchase it the next day.

Sony should have mandated one per person. The fact that scalpers can scalp is bullshit in this day and age.

At least in Japan loads of stores are doing this (through requiring point card use, lots of history, and ID checks)

If it really is 30W more efficient under load, that sounds like it must be a die shrink? TSMC 6nm is the shrink path from the 7nm the PS5 originally shipped with, has anything else used 6nm that's already out in the market?

This, uh - ‘increase the price of our hardware’ thing that console manufacturers are doing is so far ass-backwards it’s making a full circle around the Earth to the front again.

Meta’s ‘metaverse’ isn’t doing well - you know, that thing they renamed themselves to focus on?

So…their reaction to that was to increase the price of an aging piece of hardware that is the main portal to the aforementioned new company focus.

And I’m struggling to have any sympathy for Sony, either - who has typically subsidized console costs; and is now joining the loony bin with Meta.

I have never - in my decades of being obsessed with consoles - seen a manufacturer increase the price of a console a year after launch.

Sony’s made a dumbass decision here - for sure - but it’s nothing compared to the facepalm that is Meta increasing the price of the Quest. Mind boggling.

I can't be the only who hate's PS5 design overall. Just something about it doesn't sit well with me.

It's pretty easy to get one now. You can just sign up for a wait list on amazon and be notified with a 72 hour purchase link. My friend did that a few weeks ago and got one in 2 days, no hassle, at retail.

i hadn't realized there were price hikes outside the US as well. With the yen doing so poorly it must be really difficult to afford a ps5 in japan.

It's forex adjustment rather than price hike. US price isn't changed, isn't it?
