Remember user replaceable batteries? What happened to them? Hardware manufacturers killed them because they want to sell you a new phone instead. The reason is simple --- it's more profitable for them.
Who is to blame for this? Maybe you.
Somehow, consumers swallowed the idea that "free" software is better. Someone forgot to explain that "free" software often means you pay with your privacy. Someone forgot to explain that "free" software means hardware manufacturers will come to dominate the eco-system --- and cheap, disposable, unrepairable hardware will follow.
Crazy idea --- how about we pay $5 extra for a phone that is truly private and at least has a replaceable battery? Is that really "crazy"? Where is MS when you need them? Unfortunately, that ship has now sailed never to return.
Does anyone know how feature phones / flip phones fare when it comes to longevity? I think I’d be fine with one of those and an external GPS.
