I always suspected that exploring API documentation and a large codebase to find answers relevant to the task at hand probably had some similarity to researching case law and the facts/evidence of the case at hand to see what works.
Years ago I spent a summer interning at Social Security, where part of the job was applying rules to client cases based on a huge compendium of regulations called the Program Operations Manual System (I guess it basically had SSA's current interpretation of all the statutes, regulations, whatever that went into controlling their work, plus practical howto logistic stuff, you could say).
It really, really reminded me of software work.
