Worth noting though that for the world as a whole it did increase in 2021, from 72.6 to 72.8. I can't find exact confirmation of the numbers for all OECD countries* but it does appear it fell slightly from 2019 to 2020, that being the first year such had occurred for over 50 years (so much for the claim I saw on HN recently that Covid was a "nothingburger").

"because of covid". Really more because of all of the combined events of 2019-2022.

It pretty much was entirely due to COVID as far as anyone can tell. Spain experienced a drop similar to the US (and nearly all OECD countries experienced some slight decline). There's no suggestion natural disasters or mass shootings or civil unrest etc. contributed measurably to changes in life expectancy - what else would you propose?

Suicide, drugs of choice, medical malpractice, and what is yet to come.

Why would those cause a drop in life expectancy for 2020 compared to previous years?

Economies, like rockets for people, are not good when traveling too fast (turn you in to chunky salsa) or too slow, crash into the ocean. The west threw tons of people out of work and their actions shuttered too much of the engine of the economy previously thought to be small business. Those people sometimes did the unthinkable. Economic power does affect health. Sudden loss of employment means no way to pay for routine health care and essential medicines. People simply waiting to see how the new forbidden to talk about here in a negative way, "medicine" of the pandemic, were denied surgery, and even organ transplants. And some that did take it died for "some reason" anyway did so at rates far greater than they should have. The medicine makers tried to keep the real statistics from the public eye for 70 years. Apparently federal judges had other ideas. News coming in from the UK shows what is really happening. I can't tell you to go into a time machine and convince yourself to not to do something that most people did.

The death rate is increasing exponentially month over month according to the UK report which I analyzed myself. The prime minister resigned just hours after releasing it.

I'm kind of tired of TV clown shows and puppet shows training my family and friends to demonize me concerning my decision NOT to do something which obviously doesn't work anyway. Everyone got sick anyway. I had to fight enemy propaganda aimed at those I love reaimed directly at me. I will not forgive those people. But I stood my ground and forgave my family who was simply programmed like Pavlov's dogs over it.

Doing the same thing over and over expecting different results is insane. I know a few things about insanity.

The leading cause of death in some parts of Canada are "unknown". It is nearly a third higher than the next most common fatalility risk. Stroke isn't even in the top 4 anymore there.

Bluntly, unknown my ass.

So much for the flying cars future...
