Bupropion works very fast by itself, where it works at all. Most likely people who benefit from bupropion get no benefit from the DXM, and vice versa.

So maybe this is supposed to be a scattershot to try two things that might work. If it comes back after a week without, it was the BUP that worked, otherwise the DXM.

The bup has a modifier effect on the dxm. The fact that it is also an antidepressant is not the main driver.

If it’s just cough suppressant and buspar, I imagine it could be prescribed off-label instead.

Bupropion is Welbutrin, not buspar. Just to clarify. Buspar is buspirone.

So it's Wellbutrin and cough syrup, seriously? Could this be as simple as getting a Wellbutrin RX and taking it with cough suppressant? Surely...surely not?

yes, theoretically. the wrinkles are: finding a cough syrup that's pure DXM, and if they're doing anything fancy with extended release (I don't think so, but worth checking.)

your best bet is getting a compounding pharmacy to make the tablets for you, if your insurance doesn't cover this and it's too expensive out-of-pocket.

This is DXM, a dissociative like ketamin, found in cough medications like Robotussin. You can get quite high on it.
