My observation is that the strong reactions to the Nature article mainly came from people who had limited knowledge of ethics, and limited familiarity with science. I think people’s knee-jerk reaction to this points to something dangerous, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. The open hostility towards guardrails meant to protect all people is troubling.
Nature: “we should try to be nice to each other as much as possible”
Response: “how dare you tell me how to live my life, oppressor!”
