The announcement post is at https://spreadprivacy.com/protect-your-inbox-with-duckduckgo... - a better title might be DuckDuckGo Email Protection Beta Now Open to All (and might be worth switching the link if possible)

Comments moved thither. Thanks!

Thanks! This should be the main link. When I land on the current link in Firefox, I get a prompt to install an extension with no further explanation.

"DuckDuckGo Email Protection Beta Now Open to All except Safari users" would be even better.

It probably won't work on Internet Explorer either. Nor on Epiphany. Nor Netscape. Nor Mosaic. Nor Lynx. Nor...

DuckDuckGo Email Protection was previously in private beta. It is now available to all as of today. [1]

Summary:

> DuckDuckGo Email Protection is a free email forwarding service that removes multiple types of hidden email trackers and lets you create unlimited unique private email addresses on the fly – without switching email providers or apps. [...]

Weird how it doesn't say anything about what it does.

There is a "Learn more" link: https://www.spreadprivacy.com/protect-your-inbox-with-duckdu...

This is helpful but again does not appear on the page that OP linked to if you don't have their app or browser extension installed.

I didn't realize that, I already had the extension

The title makes it sound like it's DuckDuckGo Email. Which it isn't, it's email protection. Which isn't explained at all.

Agreed, IMO it's silly and almost feels like a dark pattern for an innocuous seeming link like that to require an extension installed. For those who already have the extension, see [1]

I started using DDG because I thought they were about privacy, openness and being the antithesis to the likes of Google. Slowly but surely, they proved that that wasn't the case.

I'm not using DDG for anything.

Does this service have features that differentiate it from Apple's Hide My Email service + Apple Mail's "Protect Mail Activity" feature?

I mean other than not having to be tied to Apple Mail of course.

Was thinking the same thing but considering this is free, I'm skeptical.

I don't know, I'm always skeptical of free products now, it feels as if something critical is missing.

Paying for a service at least gives me peace of mind that I'm consuming a service I selected. Free services seem to be out in the wild.

I wasn't exactly pleasantly surprised when the extension it made me install switched my default search engine too. I guess in retrospect it makes sense, but at least I don't remember that being a prominent warning.

Same here. No more DDG.
