Ask HN: NAS Alternatives

I need a NAS device but I don't want to afford $100. How can I build my own network storage system(home level) by paying a max of $30?

The key to a cheap NAS is reusing old hardware and engineering around wear&tear. Have a look at my blog post about that [1]

Edit: maybe consider an old laptop running Linux and extend it with USB hard drives.

With such a low budget perhaps a rasberry-pi I guess? Or a super old used tower from eBay?
