German here: If you're near a freeway exit, and don't know if it might be the one you want to take, it's too late to switch lanes anyway.
Exits are generally marked something like 200m, 500m, 1km in advance, because that is when you need to move over.
I've personally never found the signs confusing that way - and I did my practical exam on this marvel of engineering: [0]
