I think its a silly idea that consciousness cannot be produced by computation.
It may have some physical aspect to it - some property of matter (panpsychism?) or quantum effects.
> some property of matter
How about “pancomputationalism”, aka, causality.
Humans are made entirely out of quantum fields. I don't think you can get out of the idea that human consciousness isn't produced by computation without positing something like a non quantum field theory soul, for which there is no evidence.
Consciousness isn't well defined enough for us to prove your assertion as right or wrong.
As such, we also don't know if consciousness is required for an AI that can perform most useful tasks at human level.
I think what's referred to a "consciousness" is just computation applied to all the inputs received in being a living thing.
Good! The names we have for algorithms are for us, not computers. Computers are just physical machines, they don't care if the math is called AGI, HLI or whatever. People taking these ideas and names seriously are re-programming themselves, not bringing something new into the world.
What is our consciousness other than a set of physical chemical reactions?
