If the planes will be "nearly empty of passengers" and only carry "elites" then the impact on global fossil fuel usage will be insignificant. Like the Concorde.
The problem would be if they are somehow not cost prohibitive and millions of middle class people are able and willing to pay extra to go faster than subsonic planes.
Does that sound likely?
