Ask HN: What is the current state of Recommenation services(inhouse, SaaS etc.)?
Just wondered with lack of good recomendations(cross/up selling) in many ecommerce sites. I.e. - looking for gravel/cyclocross bicycle. Checking out most popular bicycle sellers: 1. https://www.bikesonline.com/2022-marin-gestalt-gravel-bike No recommendations. "Customers Also Viewed" section looks weird.
2. https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/vitus-energie-evo-crs-cx-bike-force-2022/rp-prod202342 "Helmets" and "Jackets"?? Weird set. Better than nothing, but I want more. "Also Recommended" looks weird.
3. https://www.bike24.com/p2415518.html?menu=1000,173 "Related products" shows me weird set of products - kickstands, KNOT stems and very expensive bike.
4. https://www.merlincycles.com/merlin-malt-g2x-grx-gravel-bike-2022-197443.html No recommendations.
5. https://www.competitivecyclist.com/why-cycles-r-v4-rival-gravel-bike?skid=WYC000G-TIT-L Similar bikes - looks weird. "Purchase Together" - tires and tubes??
What I'd expect - what bikes other people look also, what accessories people bought(shoes, pedals, helmets, clothing, gloves, spare parts etc.), suggest me product bundles - most popular sets.
What do you think, why popular ecommerce sites do not suggest more related goods? SaaS companies didn't reach them yet? Businesses don't want to implement recommendations? Other reason?
