I expect these devices have plenty of vulnerabilities over the years and there have been Linux remote exploits, so probably you could hack them to replace the software or even just brick the device to avoid the vulnerabilities.

Also companies like Raptor Computing, Facebook and others are creating open BMCs people can use.
