UC Berkeley halts construction of student housing at People's Park after protest

The protesters want transient housing for homeless people, not for more UC Berkeley students. If you haven't seen them, Berkeley has some world-class homeless encampments. You can get some idea of the situation here: https://www.berkeleyside.org/2021/09/02/berkeleys-biggest-ho...

Suffice it to say there are a lot of homeless people in CA and there are activists who want to improve their condition. Whether people's park is an appropriate location to provide transient housing is a controversial issue.

Generally the trend among NIMBYs is "we want housing, but we don't want it here, specifically". So they will be 100% favor of housing in the abstract, but as soon as someone tries to build some, there will always be some reason why that particular housing is a bad idea.
