This curmudgeonly critic of hard science fiction finds the topic fascinating. Now that earth sciences are getting their due in hard scifi, readers expect the same scientific accuracy depicting biological evolution they've come to expect with physics-based plot elements.
I highly recommend "So Simple a Beginning" by Rahuveer Parthasarathy for the latest in the emerging field of biophysics.
