Right now there is no crypto that can be used as a currency. Bitcoin and ethereum are too volatile and are best used as an asset similar to gold. The other ones are too small and have a similar volatility issue. What are retailers going to accept?

They might want to accept it but that does not mean they will.

Merchants can also accept volatile base tokens like ETH and have it converted through a processor to fiat or stablecoin for income purposes. This gives the consumer the choice to pay with ETH instead of a stablecoin.
