I'd generally prefer a machine that copes with whatever it finds rather than keeping state, which is a recipe for trouble. I've booted an old disk on a different hardware and have it be fine. I've also seen windows folk change some hardware and have their machine freak out.

But then I seldom reboot since linux hibernate got good, so maybe I'm a bad judge.
