The proportion of the holes (longer than wide) and irregular spacing caught my eye.
Just for fun I'd guess it's a predatory pattern in which a creature dives under the sand (first small crater hole at bottom of the photo) burrows for a bit, and then emerges to capture prey, then reenters the same hole, burrows for a bit to where there's not such an obvious disturbance in the surface, and repeats the hunt.
The comparatively wide dispersal around the holes could be a sign of a high-velocity leap...

and the increased gas pressure is fracturing the rock above to form a line of fissures which are producing burp craters
