wouldnt changing the number break continuity in subscriptions / recurring?

Also wouldnt't it increase the barrier to use that card? (albeit still have to enter expiry/cvv , but it's less than if you use a new competitor card)

Having an expiration date already breaks continuity.

Subscriptions have some sort of grace period after the expiration date. That wouldn't work if the card number changed.

It works though, because the bank can still receive the transaction and reroute it appropriately. It's pretty common in the EU, especially with things like road tolls that don't check the card validity in real time.
