I feel like some suggestions try to fix the problem without changing much.
We could instead change the roots of the problem. Education and access.
- Making public funded research publicly available (since it was paid with public funds): papers, etc. for anybody to access, legally, for free.
- Lowering the cost of textbooks.
With more people having access to the materials we might realize there are a lot of latent geniuses out there in need of a chance. The easier to get access to those papers and materials the easier it is to double check the results, too, and to cross-pollinate between fields.
