I've often worried that spies are perfectly capable of hiding their actions from the elected politicians that they nominally report to, but perhaps I should have been more worried that the politicians would not do anything even if given evidence of wrongdoing.

secret service are institutions that frequently operate above the rule of law. You might argue that this is necessary for them to be effective in conducting their work but we can also the see the risk of agencies or agents 'going rogue' or perhaps over time becoming beyond the power of elected politicians

Home Office just means something very different these days. Stop watching, we work good, ok?
