HN thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31611016

Some more details from the thread:

> They were mostly along the lines of "this is great, would like to hire you..." some had specific salary/position info in the message and 2 were straight-up "we'd hire you right away". I'm really sorry if this sounds braggy but I'm trying to reflect the tone.

...

> The highest offer I received was from a Bay Area company with a salary range of 180-250. It needed relocation too. I didn't pursue the conversation, so I'm not sure what the entire package would look like.

Pretty impressive

Hello everyone i will like to introduce you to a legit and reliable hacker who can get the job done. Contact him on hackersonline420 @ Gmail com. With his help, i was able to hack into my girlfriends phone and found out that she was cheating on me with another man and she had sex with him several times. i had access to her phone so i could view all her texts and social media interactions. i was really hurt but i think it is worth it because now i know the truth.

There are many similar projects, but that does not matter. A sleek, well-crafted, live portfolio is a running demonstration of your skills. I'm glad to know few employers used their conscience and decided to hire him, instead of wasting his time with leetcode

Good job, and congrats on the offer!

Recently someone posted a link to someone's personal website that was also a Windows-style desktop environment (built using WASM, I believe). I believe it was under an Ask thread "show your favourite website designs". Does anyone remember the link?

Might not be it but maybe Samy Kamkar is who you are looking for? https://samy.pl/

Thanks for sharing, but it's a different one. This one takes a long time to load for me, the other one was incredibly smooth.

Definitely a really cool project and totally makes sense especially since cloud PC has become a thing.

creating a portfolio of projects still is one of the better ways to attract attention in getting a job.

the problem is that it is unfair to those who don't have time for side projects or who are paid to work on projects that can't be made public.

on the other hand if you are unemployed then this is the best use of your time.

That's like saying Einstein wouldn't have been discovered if he couldn't communicate

well, the big difference in academia is that almost all research is public already, so they don't have that problem that people are at a disadvantage because they can't make their work public.

even if you are employed and can’t make your work public, just a few small projects will improve your chances. i’ve spent the last 6 or so months interviewing applicants for senior programmer/analyst roles and the number of otherwise qualified candidates who have _literally zero_ public repos or projects or code samples is astounding.

if you have children, especially if you are female, or a single parent, chances are you simply do not have time for side projects.

i agree with the benefits, but it favors people without children

If you choose to have children, you're accepting the associated costs.

birth rates are falling. our society needs children. working mothers especially bear the brunt, effectively having two jobs. it is absolutely not reasonable that children become a disadvantage in getting a job. already in many places it is illegal discrimination to ask employees if they have children. technically, asking for side projects, or being rejected because you don't have any side projects can result in the same kind of discrimination.

Congratulations!

well it's awfully slow maybe its getting a ton of traffic?
